Can I be a songwriter if I can’t sing?

Of course, you can! Songwriting is all about coming up with melodies and lyrics, so even if you don’t have a great singing voice, you can still be a songwriter.

The majority of a song’s writing is in the melody, chord progressions, and beat – all of which you don’t need to be able to sing in order to write great songs.

There are plenty of successful songwriters who can’t sing that well. Their songs were famously sung by other artists. This way they don’t have to worry about their voice or how well they can sing. They leave that up to the vocalist.

They are content with writing songs or only composing lyrics without singing themselves. So don’t let your lack of singing ability hold you back – start writing those songs today.

How to write songs if you can’t sing

So how do you go about writing songs if you can’t sing?

Firstly, think of someone who has a voice that will suit the style of music you’re looking for.

Someone is going to have to sing the song that you come up with, so you’ll want to have the particular type of singer in mind.

Next, come up with a melody and chord progression that fits your ideal singer’s vocal range. Then work on words that are related to the melody.

The vocal range can be defined as the number of notes in a singer’s voice. Every singer has a certain range of notes that they can comfortably sing.

A singer who has a wide vocal range has many different notes they can sing in their voice. Depending on the singer’s vocal range, they will have certain notes that they can’t sing because they are either too low or too high.

Writing song lyrics when you can’t sing

Song lyrics can be about anything – love, heartbreak, happiness, sadness, nature, life, etc.

When writing song lyrics, it’s important to come up with words that fit the melody and chord progression of the song.

Since you won’t be the one singing, you can use an instrument to come up with the melody.

The most common instruments to write songs are the piano and the guitar. The piano is the most straightforward instrument for songwriting because all the notes are laid out, plain to see.

You’ll want to make sure that the melody and the lyrics fit together with the chords and rhythm of the song you’re writing.

In a way, it’s easier to write a song this way because you will not be thinking of your limitations as a singer.

Anybody with the right vocal range will be able to sing your song once you’re done.

In fact, you can write songs with very low or very high notes because you won’t be the one actually singing them.

Keep in mind, though, that the easier your song is to sing, the easier it will be to find a singer.

The benefits of being a songwriter who doesn’t sing

There are a few benefits of being a songwriter without singing.

The main benefit is that you don’t have to worry about your voice or how well you can sing. You leave that up to the vocalist.

You can also focus on writing songs or only composing lyrics without having to worry about being able to sing them yourself.

This can be a great way to get started in songwriting if you’re not confident in your singing ability.

It can also be a great way to write songs for other singers who don’t have the time or resources to write their own songs.

You have the freedom to experiment with different styles of music that you wouldn’t be able to sing.

Since you’re not limited by your voice, you can try out different genres and styles of music. You might even find a new genre or style of music that you really enjoy writing songs in.

Lastly, being a songwriter without singing can give you more flexibility when it comes to choosing a vocalist for your songs.

You’ll be able to choose singers who are better suited for the song you’re writing, making it more likely that they will want to sing your song.

Examples of famous songwriters who don’t sing

Pop music is a genre where it’s common to have the song written by someone else. It’s also common for country artists to sing songs written by other songwriters.

For example, the country hit “Write This Down” was written by Dana Hunt Black and Kent Robbins and was recorded by George Strait.

Some of the most famous songwriters have been producers for other artists.

Max Martin famously wrote “…Baby, One More Time” which  Britney Spears sang. He also co-wrote “Kissed A Girl” which Katy Perry made famous.

How to get started as a songwriter who doesn’t sing

If you’re not sure where to start, try writing some lyrics first. A lot of songwriters compose music without having any intention of recording the song themselves.

It will also be helpful to learn to play a musical instrument. The most common songwriting instruments are piano and guitar.

Another path to take would be learning how to use music software such as Logic Pro, Ableton, or  Pro Tools.

Once you have a few songs under your belt, start looking for artists who might be interested in recording them.

There are a lot of ways to find singers and musicians who are looking for new music. You can post in online forums and discover new artists on social media.
